Weather in Puerto Rico
Various travel guides published and websites will tell you that weather in Puerto Rico is always great all year round; this is not always true. Yes, Puerto Rico's average weather is a sunny tropical temperature of 79 - 85 degrees, but there are various factors that you really need to consider before booking your vacation to Puerto Rico such as hurricane season, hotel rates, crowds and overall weather. In summary: - December through May - Best times to travel to Puerto Rico - June & August - Very hot and a bit humid - August & September - The most risky months to travel, this is the time when most hurricanes, storms and rain hit Puerto Rico. On average a hurricane hits Puerto Rico every 3.5 years. When it hits, well... it hits and it will ruin your vacation for sure. - Hurricane Season - The official hurricane season begins in June 10th and ends on November 30th.
Travel Seasons & How it Affects your Budget
- High Season for Tourists = Highest Rates for Travelers Most tourists travel to Puerto Rico and other islands in the Caribbean between the months of January and April (High Season), when the weather in the north is coldest and Puerto Rico's weather is at it's best. During the high travel season, weather is great, but lodging is also at it's highest rates. If you are planning to spend your vacation in Puerto Rico during high season but find that you can't afford the high Season rates, then we suggest that you explore the less traveled paths around Puerto Rico that offer just as much fun, beauty and attractions for travelers. The Southwest Region offers more affordable rates at small Boutique hotels, Paradores (Small country Inns), vacation rentals and you will enjoy less crowds beaches than in the "tourist trap" locations around San Juan, the eastern coast resorts areas and even Vieques which is quickly becoming the hottest destination in Puerto Rico for beach getaway vacations, honeymoons and weddings.
- High Season for Puerto Ricans = High demand for family friendly accommodations Residents of Puerto Rico (Puerto Ricans) often vacation when children are out of school; summers, and the week of Semana Santa (Easter Week), the ONE week where most beaches around the island of Puerto Rico are literally packed with beach lovers. Camp grounds are usually full in Semana Santa. Puerto Ricans usually spend their vacation outside of the San Juan / Metro Area. They head to the West coast of Porta del Sol, Vieques Island, and Flamenco Beach in Culebra Island where most accommodations are booked and the heat and humidity is at it's peak. If you don't like crowds at the beach, then make sure you don't schedule your visit to the following beaches during Easter week; the beaches in the towns of Cabo Rojo, the town of Rincon, the town of Luquillo, Flamenco Beach in Culebra, and Sun Bay Beach in ViequesM.
- Low Season - Low Season is a great time to travel to Puerto Rico because the hotel rates are lower during this season and you will find beaches nearly empty. Low Travel Season in Puerto Rico starts around April 15 (at the end of Easter week) and ends mid December right before the Christmas holidays (hot dates for travel to Puerto Rico, hotels and villa rentals book far in advance).
